Message:Sarah “Salley” SLAVEN >DINWIDDIE – my 4th Great Grandmother (17feb1784- 30 Aug 1854). ..who at age of about 70, with a windowed son (John Dinwiddie (1809-1870)), traveled from Ohio by wagon to Boone, Iowa – and essentially died as it seems trying to help her daughter Mary (with 6 kids and various businesses) through the sudden loss of her husband (Robert Smith) in the Boone, Iowa area.

Message:This is most likely Benjamin K. McCan, born about 1834 in Ohio. Served in Co. "A", 35th Ia Infantry. Died about December 1883. Married Esther LeCornu in 1857 and had 4 children, two of which died young: Charles H. and Marguerite A. McCan. The other two children were: Mary McCan Blakeley and John W. McCan. He is buried in Pleasantville cemetery in Sullivan co., Mo.

Message:My g-g-grandmother. Icelandic immigrant to MN. Unconfirmed 1st marriage to David Ross. (No confirmed info on him.) My g-grandmother had Ross on her birth certificate; stayed in MN as foster child w/relatives. Anna was using Ross surname when met & married J. Kemler. Died in Hobart, OK of TB and brought by train back to Cedar Rapids by her husband for funeral/burial. (Newspapers.com clippings)

Message:Unfortunately, the WPA made many errors when they did their work in the late 1930s and early 1940s. As transcribers it is our job to transcribe what was written, just as is done with census record transcriptions. We can't change what was written. This is one of the reasons we have the Post-em note feature so that people like you can let others know of errors such as this.

Message:Re note saying 'another wife is buried on this lot.' This is probably Lauranda Beers who married David Beers in 1864 and died 25 Jan 1918 in Jackson Co IA. Her death certificate says buried in Mt Hope Cemetery. She was Lorinda? Diadem O'Dell [aka L D] daughter of William O'Dell and Martha Bates. Sister of Mary M O'Dell Henton d. 1922 and Maria O'Dell Davis d. 1891.
