He was named after his maternal grandfather, the Rev. John Brown, of Rockingham County, Virginia. John's parents moved the family to Dry Grove Township in McLean County, Illinois in the mid-1840s. From there, John married Madora and together they had at least 12 children all born in Dry Grove Township, McLean County, Illinois. Its unknown when John and Madora came to Greene County, Iowa, however, they were there by the time of the 1900 Census.
